Engine oil

Oil lubricates, cleans & cools. The blow-by gas which leaks through the piston rings enters the crankcase & reacts with the engine oil to deteriorate. Replacing the engine oil at every 5,000 km intervals extends the life of engine.

Engine oil filter

Extends the life of oil and protects the engine. To be replaced at every 5,000 kms. A clogged oil filter may damage the engine.

Air filter

Dust accumulated in the filter needs to be removed. If not cleaned, complete burning of air fuel mixture is affected which further increases in fuel consumption, causes black smoke emissions & failure to comply with the local regulations. To be replaced at every 20,000 kms.

Fuel filter *

Fuel filter removes the contaminants / dirt from the fuel that is supplied to the engine for combustion. A clogged fuel filter can cause loss of power & intermittent jerking. To be replaced at every 40,000 kms.

Drive belts

These belts if broken can disable the engine, steering, A/C or charging system. To be inspected at every 10,000 kms.

Coolant

Coolant cleans and lubricates the components of the cooling system. It gets dirty from contact with metal, extreme heat & cold conditions etc. Being a chemical, it loses its strength with time. Hence, replacement of coolant is performed with time (2 years).

Coolant hoses

Hoses will start to crack or leak over long period of use. To be inspected at every 10,000 kms.

Transmission fluid

The pressure withstanding property decreases with use. Replacement of Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) to be performed at every 40,000 kms. Failure to do so may result in the damage of transmission components.

Spark plugs *

Spark plug wears out increasing the firing end gap. This gap needs to be maintained for complete burning of air-fuel mixture. To be replaced at every 20,000 kms. If not replaced at the suggested interval, fuel consumption may increase & the loss of power may be experienced.

Spark plug wires

A spark plug wire whick leaks high tension voltage will cause the spark plug to either miss a fire / cause incomplete firing. The resistance of the wire should be checked at every 10,000 kms.

Timing belt *

When the timing belt breaks, the camshaft stops rotating. This causes a change in the value timing & the valves come in contact with the piston causing consequential damage to the engine. To be replaced at every 100,000 kms.

Brake pads

Safety is the main concern. Brake efficiency depends on brake pads. If the pad goes metal to metal, they will damage the brake rotors. To be inspected at every 10,000 kms.

Brake drums and shoes

Brake shoe dust and dirt build up in the drum causing poor contact between the shoe and the drum. This creates faster wear of brake shoes & uneven braking under emergency stops. To be inspected at every 10,000 kms.

Brake fluid

When the level is low, it usually indicates the need to replace the brake pads or shoes, but this can also indicate a leak in the braking system. Further, the brake fluid absorbs moisture which decreases its boiling point & therefore, needs to be replenished at every 40,000 kms.

Clutch fluid *

When the level increases, it indicates need to replace the clutch plate. Clutch fluid absorbs moisture which decreases its boiling point & therefore, needs to be replenished at every 40,000 kms.

Tyre rotation

Ensures even tyre wear to extend tyre life. To be performed at every 10,000 kms.

Type pressure

Specified tyre pressure assures extended tyre life and safety when braking. To be inspected every month.

Tyre balancing

Any imbalance in the wheel creates symptoms of vibration at the steering at a specific speed. This can be eliminated by balancing the wheel.

Valve clearance *

Every valve needs to maintain a clearance with the rocker arm to give room for expansion of valves. If this clearance is increased, it creates a noise. The noise can be eliminated by re-adjusting the clearance to specification.

Battery *

During the battery charging process, it releases hydrogen and hence the electrolyte level goes down. The level should be brought back to “upper” or “H” mark by adding distilled water only. Furthermore, the specific gravity should also be checked. A fully charged battery should record a specific gravity of 1.26. A less value indicates that the battery needs re-charging. Battery should be inspected at every 5,000 kms.

Drive shaft dust boot

Punctured / torn dust boot admits entry of sand into the yoke assembly. The sand gets mixed with the greases & acts as an abrasive in the joints which result in a noise & damage the driveshafts. To be inspected at every 10,000 kms.

Engine & Transmission
mountings

Cracked mountings cause vibration, transmitted to the body. To be inspected at every 10,000 kms.
